Summary
“Hey,” Kristen bumped Gorgug’s side. “Can you cut my hair?”
“Why?” Gorgug’s voice brought her back in ways she doubted hers could. Why did Gorgug go wander off all alone? They were supposed to go together always.
Kristen shrugged, although the answer was right there.
“I hate it,”
or
Gorgug helps Kristen with her hair as she thinks.

Summary
Henry was his mother’s son, so he graduated from law school, politely turned down a federal clerkship, and moved west to illegally inhabit a florist shop on the edge of Chinatown.
(Or: an empty apartment, a disappearing father, a vision of a door, and a figure always just up ahead.)

Summary
“You’re not that mad at me,” Lupe says, back turned to Jess as she fishes the first aid kit down from the shelf. When she glances back, Jess is bullying a smoke between her teeth, eyes downcast as she snaps a match through its book. The flame flares, shrinks, and then it’s gone. Tossed into the sink at her shoulder, alongside the empty matchbook; all its teeth pulled out.
“I’m a little mad,” she allows, after a beat.

Bookmarker's Notes
"Lupe wants Jess when she’s fresh off the field, buoyant and red-faced and sweating. She wants her at that moment when her bat makes peace with the ball — crack! Wiping the sweat off her top lip with the collar of her shirt. Wants her muddy knees, the hair under her arms, the stubborn set to that wide jaw. Wants her like this: quiet, smoking, sallow under the lights."

Summary
Gideon remembers the first time they stuck Harrow on the ice, in her matching puffy pants and coat and her sombre black helmet, like shoving a cranky baby rook out of the nest. She fell down immediately, and when none of the adults seemed about to step in and right her, Gideon did it herself. She could skate backward by then, so she took Harrow’s mittened hands and tugged her along in slow, endless circles. She remembers—or thinks she remembers, maybe it’s just her mind filling in from later examples—Harrow’s furrowed, pinched expression of furious concentration. She always hated needing help. More than she hated Gideon, maybe. But that day, for the few hours it took her to get her blades under her, she scowlingly accepted both.
Or, the figure skating AU that happens when I binge watch too much Grand Prix coverage.
