There’s always been a fondness for fairytales within Shadow’s heart, ever since he was a young hoglet wrapped up in his sister’s arms as her voice narrated them for him.
Life isn’t full of such idyllic love, not for an hedgehog as misfortunate as Shadow and especially not where Sonic the Hedgehog is involved.

It fails to make sense to him, how he could feel like this. If he was made to be a cure, a weapon, an ultimate life-form, then these aches are illogical. They should be an impossibility - just like the strange tightness in his chest, and the incessant itching built up in his legs, and the low churn of nausea in his gut.
These aren't Shadow's symptoms, they're Maria's.
