Summary
Mihir's Keeper tells her fireflies are unafraid of the burn of their lanterns because they steal from the licks of light to scare off pests and perils of the night. She's never felt their kin, prone to shadows as she is. She prefers the comforts of the Fade. She met the Dread Wolf there.
He taught her all she knows about the world before leaving one day, without a word. His return, now, comes with an ask: to help him retrieve a magical relic he calls the orb. Mihir, forever starved for approval, agrees without a moment's consideration.
Her Keeper, unaware of the relationship Mihir built with the Dread Wolf in the Fade, sends Firra, her soon to-be husband, with them as safeguard.
They wend through woods familiar to Firra, unfamiliar to her. The journey forces revelations Mihir has never wanted to face regarding her own nature. Still, she perseveres in hopes that she may return to her clan as the First they deserve.
