Matthias drew a shaky breath and took her face between his hands. “Roëd fetla, it will take time before I’ve recovered from it—” Nina’s breath hitched. He pressed his forehead to hers. “It will take time to recover. Wanden olstrum end kendesorum…” The water hears and understands.
Nina's stomach dropped. She knew the saying’s ending all too well. He hadn’t forgiven her. Exhausted and despairing, she finished for him waveringly. “Isen ne bejstrum." The ice does not forgive.
“Nina. Roëd fetla,” he whispered, “I am not ice.”
He pressed a kiss into the palm of her hand and she felt warmth bloom inside her chest. He pressed another to her cheek, then to her forehead and Nina found herself suppressing the urge to say something ridiculous to make him blush and smile again. Instead, she unfurled herself from her corner, pulling him to her until they lay curled around each other on the bunk, holding each other close again for the first time in months. She closed her eyes. She could feel his heart beating steadily beneath her cheek. He wrapped his arms securely around her, keeping her pressed tightly to him, her head tucked beneath his chin.
It felt like coming home.
