Chapter Text
Imagine me and you
“Pregnant?!” Rachel shouted as she stared at the test in her hand, she had taken the test more as a precaution than expectations, she just needed to rule it out so that she could think of other things.
She’d been divorced for two months now and living with Luc for three, having moved in straight away after literally chasing after her. She hadn't wanted to punish Heck more than she already had.
The divorce had been abnormally quick; with Rachel giving Heck whatever he wanted and just signing the paper so that they could each get on with their lives. She knew that he deserved whatever he wanted; she had caused this separation at the end of the day. She should make it easier for him.
But sitting on the toilet with this test in hand, the one that was now telling her she was in fact pregnant with her ex-husband's baby.
An ex-husband that had cut off all contact with her and her family when those papers were signed, not that she could blame him for that, he needed to move on with his life.
Rachel placed her hand on her stomach that did not look pregnant. Which couldn’t be the case as, if she was in fact pregnant then she had to be around the five-month mark of her pregnancy; there wasn't much action after they had gotten wed.
“Rach, baby, are you alright in there?” Luc called; Rachel was never this long.
“I’m alright, just a minute” she called putting her head in her hands. How was she meant to do this to Luc? They hadn’t even talked about kids yet and now she’s taken the decision out of her hands. And stuck her ex-husband in the mix as well for good measure.
Not looking up “Actually. Can you come in?” still with her head in her hands as she heard the bathroom door being opened as Luc came in.
“What’s wrong? Did, ooooh” was all she said, as she eye fell on the pregnancy test.
“Your pregnant?” she softly asked sounding very vulnerable in doing so, this was delicate territory.
Making Rach look up into those scared eyes, she could only imagine what was going through Luc’s head right now.
“It would seem so, probably five months” she said back, slowly reaching for her loves hand. Rachel was relieved when not only did she take her hand, but Luc grabbed her hand and held on tight.
Luc was shocked, this was the last thing that she had been expecting when she came to check on her partner.
“Five months” Luc said back, trying to process this new news.
“Five months, what do you want to do?” Luc asked, she had far too many thoughts of how this could all go, but before she spiralled about all of it, she needed to know what Rach was thinking.
Taking a minute to think about what she wanted, that was easy it was the same thing that she has wanted since the first time she saw Luc at her wedding. She wanted that woman to be stood up there with her. Just now there was a baby in that vision as well.
Placing the hand that wasn’t holding Luc’s on her belly, the belly that she now knew was housing a baby. A baby that was part her and part Heck; but one that she wanted to raise with the woman in front of her.
“I want this baby; I’ve only just found out about them, but I can already feel them in my arms. However, I don’t want Heck, yes, he's the father. But I want you Luc, I want you and this baby; that is if you still want me, still want us. I know it's a lot to ask...”
“You want me involved, you don’t want Heck back?” she questioned, she thought that she was about to lose Rach again.
“Heck is the father that is it, you are my love, the one I want a family with and get married to.” Rachel says with tears in her eyes.
“You want to marry me?” Luc asked like that was the important part of all of this.
Laughing slightly breaking the tension. Between them.
“You're not running away?” she questioned back once she stopped laughing.
“Only if you want me to, otherwise I’m here for everything and I mean everything” she said with tears in her eyes.
“Really? You want this, you want all this mess?” How was this not scarring her away; this was a massive change to their life?
“I do, I love you and this baby is a part of you; that means that I love this baby already, so yes if you will have me, I will be here for both of you” she knew that she could get her heart broken here but for once she didn’t care, she wanted them. She loves Rachel too much to let nerves win.
“I have to tell Heck” Rachel said, squeezing Luc’s hand not knowing what she was going to say. But Rachel knew that he deserved to know and be involved.
“You have to tell Heck” Luc says back.
“But first shall we make an appointment to make sure that you are in fact pregnant?” Luc asked wanting to ensure there was a baby before they tracked down the father, she wasn’t going to get between Heck and the kid. But she wasn’t planning on losing them either, if Rachel wanted the same.
“Yes, let's do that” Rachel said leaning into kiss Luc, she was so relieved that she had the other woman in this second. In just a few words she had calmed her down enough to think again.
“Yep, you’re pregnant” the doctor said looking at the screen, before continuing.
“About twenty-five weeks along, you should have come to see me sooner” as he continued to type away on the computer
Luc was trying not to snap at the doctor for that one.
“I’ve only just found out” Rachel said not being able to take her eyes off the screen she had no idea how that was in her belly when her belly was tiny. But she was informed that her who was located close to her spine resulting in her small belly, meaning that she would be showing less.
Turning back to look at them, he did some quick thinking before realising that this was one of those times to keep his thoughts to himself.
“Well anyway everything is looking good so far, there are some things to go over but yes it looks good. Now do mums want to know the gender?” he asked.
“Yes” Luc answered before she could think.
Looking back at Rachel, as she squeezed her hand “If you want to love”
Looking away from her to the doctor “What are we having Doc?” she asked, she was happy that Luc was excited; that she did in fact want to be here doing this with her.
“It’s a girl” he said with a smile, hopping that this wouldn’t be one of those disappointed couples.
Looking at Luc “We’re having a girl” she didn't mean to say that; but she didn't regret it either. They would be raising it between them, even if Heck was the father this baby was going to have at least three parents.
“A girl” with tears in her eyes Luc couldn’t quite believe it, she had only known about this baby for one week and she might have already gotten over attached to her, she was scared that Heck could come along and change it all, but he still had the right to know. Even if she feared what he might do.
Getting in contact with Heck was easier said than done, Rachel was getting a headache just thinking about telling him.
He had cut off all contact, sitting that he if could not love her then he wouldn’t be able to see her either.
But that meant going to see some one that she didn’t know would react to all of this.
“Are you sure I can’t go instead of you?” Luc asked again for what felt like the millionth time. Since finding out about the kid she had gotten more protective of Rachel.
“Luc, if you go instead, Coop won’t even let you in the door. We used to be friends, I am hoping that means something, or at least he lets me talk” Rachel said making sure that she had the sonogram in her bag.
“Will you at least let me be in the car?” She asked wanting to be there for her in some way.
“Yeah” knowing that otherwise she would be worrying the entire time.
“We need to go before I lose my nerve” Rachel said back, making Luc start moving.
“Let’s go find the father of your baby then” trying to sound as peppy as she didn’t feel; this was giving Luc terrible anxiety.
“Our baby. Unless that is not what you want?” feeling insecure that she was changing her mind.
Seeing the look on Rachel’s face “Let’s find our baby’s father then” Luc said with a kiss to the cheek, she didn’t know that was acceptable for her to say yet, it was uncharted territory.
Helping Rachel into the car, before moving round to the driver’s side.
“Let’s do this then” she said starting the car to make the short journey to Cope's.
The silence that filled the car was nearly deafening, neither knew what they could say to make any of this better.
So, neither tried, just let it be quiet instead, letting themselves sit in the moment before things changed, in what way they didn’t know yet.
Pulling up outside of Coopers.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to come in with you?” Luc asked wanting to jump out the car and take all the potential pain, even if she knew it didn’t work like that.
Kissing Luc, before quickly jumping out of the car, turning back to look at her “Just, be here” she said before shutting the car door. Not looking back to Luc as she made her way up to Cope's door before she could think better of it, Rachel knocked on the door; looking back to Luc sending her a kiss; giving her a moment of relief as she did.
But like all moments this one was broken by the man that they had come to see.
“Oh, it's you, what do you want?” not sounding at all happy about this turn of events.
“It's nice to see you too Cooper” Rachel said holding her nerve.
“What do you want Rachel?” he questioned again, how was he meant to interact with the woman that had broken his best friend heart? He had even less time for her girlfriend.
“May I come in?” she asked she didn't want to do this on the pavement.
Thinking for a minute before he noticed that the other woman was sitting in the car, making him mad.
“No, you can say it here” he said coldly to her, whatever she had to say couldn’t be that important.
“Cooper” unfortunely this was how she thought that this would go.
“What do you want lady? What could you possibly want from me?” He didn’t think that he would ever have to deal with them ever again and yet here she was bothering him on his doorstep.
Seeing that look on his face, she knew that he had made his mind up about this.
“I need to get in contact with Heck” she said.
“What? Not hurt him enough already, you need to go back for seconds? He’s moved on or he's trying to, he doesn’t need you coming back changing your mind to mess some more with his head” taking out some of his anger on her.
“It's not like that Coop” half begging.
“Then what is it like Rachel, because you broke that man, I can’t let you do that again. Leave him alone” he said about to shut the door in her face.
Seeing this, she knew that she didn’t have much other choice.
“I’m pregnant” she shouted before he could shut door on her.
Making him pause in his action. “Five months pregnant” Making it clear why she needed to speak to Heck.
Opening and closing his mouth before saying “You better come in then” he turned pale; this was big news, news that he didn’t know how his friend would take.
Walking into the living room, he needed a drink.
“Do you know where he is?” she asked seeing as he was now downing a glass of whiskey.
Taking a minute to down his drink before poring himself another one “New Zealand the last I heard, I would ask if you wanted one, but you know?” he said indicating at her belly.
“New Zealand” Rachel was not expecting the other side of the world.
“Yeah, he’s finally writing that book that he’s talked about for years. Rachel are you sure about this?” he asked.
“Yes Cooper" going into her bag, pulling out the sonogram picture; before showing it him.
“I’m sure” she said just holding it out to him.
“Shit” downing the second glass, going to refill his drink for the third time.
“So, Heck?” Rach asked she wanted his contact information and then she could get the hell out of here and back with Luc.
“Yes, right” he said walking out of the room, before coming back in with a notebook.
“Here is his email and phone number. He was 13 hours ahead last I heard” handing her a piece of paper.
“Thank you” being glad that there wasn’t any more fighting.
“Try breaking it to him, you know softly” he didn't know how Heck would take it, he knew what the old Heck would say but since the split he hadn't been the same.
“I will try, thank you I’ll leave you too it” Rachel said moving to leave the house.
“Hey Rach, can I meet them you know when their born?” he wanted to meet Heck’s baby, he always thought that he would be their child’s god father. But this was different than he had ever expected.
Not having to think “Of course Coup, thanks again” She had known Coop for years, he was one of Heck’s oldest friends she wasn’t going to say no.
Breathing a sigh of relief as she left the house; step one down; now step two.
