Chapter Text

*4 years before the show*

Hawks was eighteen and had been a pro-hero for only six months, it was different then he had expected it to be. Mainly because the commission insisted that the money and training not be wasted so he had to be number one. This meant no dating, no scandals, scripted interviews, a none existence back story all of that.

Then there were the modeling shoots, how Hawks loathed the model and he also disliked the product endorsements. The young man just wanted to be out there saving people and children, like he had been saved. But he also was not allowed to complain, so he just did what he was told.

While on patrol his phone rang, so he answered, it was the president. Hawks got reprimanded over how he answered, but then was told the cops got a call about an address he was asked to watch. The house in question was vacated and abandoned, but its listed owner was connected to Trigger deals.

So Hawks hung up and flew over, he found two cops with an old lady, someone he had seen a lot in the area, she lived nearby. But then he saw a new person, a young man around his age with black hair and tattered clothes. He flew down and heard the lady complaining about the young man and trespass and the smell of fire. The white haired man, who had blue eyes and was pale, just looked bored and irritated.

“Officer,” Hawks said. This particular officer was connected to the commission, so he was not surprised to see Hawks.

“Oh look, the new bird hero,” The white haired man said. Hawks just raised an eyebrow at him.

“This young hoodlum is trespassing!” The old lady said, angrily. “And I saw smoke! He was setting fires.”

“I told you before,” The white haired man said. “I am not trespassing. I own this property.” The older woman scoffed.

“You do?” Hawks asked.

“As of last weekend,” The white haired man said. “I came by to check it and clean up the obvious mess.”

“Liar,” The woman said. “You look like a homeless bum.” The young man was visibly offended and Hawks sighed.

“Can you prove this?” The officer asked.

“The paperwork is still held up in the system,” The white haired man said.

“I can handle this,” Hawks said. “You escort the lady back home.” The cop nodded and started escorting the lady.

This was not normal protocol, but in the grand scheme of things bother Hawks and this cop were commission agents with different titles. Yes the commission grasp went that far and Hawks was the superior when it came to this house. This was also not something most civilians would bat an eye at with how they look at heroes. But when Hawks looked over at the white haired man, he knew this was no ordinary civilian, since his face said this was strange.

“Gunna beat me up with the cop away?” The white haired asked.

“What?” Hawks asked. That was a strange comment to make as far as he was concerned. “No.. Hold up. What’s your name?”

“Totoro,” The white haired man said. Hawks raised an eyebrow.

“Totoro?” Hawks asked. “Really?” Totoro sighed and pulled out his phone and made a video call.

Suddenly Kazuhito Ito was on the screen, the lawyer who headed the hetero-morph advocacy and protection agency. Hawks raised his eyebrow and had a conversation with Mr. Ito, who vouched for Totoro.

“Good enough Birdie?” Totoro asked.

“For now,” Hawks said. “But what about this fire?”

“I was burning trash,” Totoro said. “If you can’t tell, there is A LOT of it.”

Hawks looked around and there was a lot of trash all around the house. Honestly it was a bit of an eyesore for the area. The house would need a lot of work.

“Yeah,” Hawks said.

“It’s worse on the inside,” Totoro said. “There is a whole ass tub in the bedroom not hooked up to anything.” Hawks had a taken aback look. “Yeah.”

“I will let you get back to cleaning up your property,” Hawks said.

“Just keep that crazy lady away from me,” Totoro said. Hawks nodded before flying off again.

While in the air he called the cop to make sure the older lady stayed away, before heading off to speak to the commission.

Totoro watched the bird hero fly off, the red wings and blond hair had reminded him of his first crush. So he had been following the hero since he debuted, not that he would admit to it. He wasn’t even sure it was the same bird, but red wings were rare.

Once Hawks was just speck in the distance Totoro finally turned back to his mess of house. A house he won, technically illegally, in a game of black jack. Once in which he only had one because of card counting and his eidetic memory.

But he had also recently stupidly told Mr. Ito about his childhood and his father. Not who his father is but just his job, and hinted at his murder suicide plan. This had upset the older man greatly on many levels, Totoro should have realized it would have. But he honestly felt for years he was not worth caring about at all, with his childhood would anyone?

Mr. Ito dragged him to dinner to see Kazue and Goro, but didn’t tell them anything. Just showing Totoro how much people cared about him. After everything he was still just a big brother who didn’t want his siblings to cry. So in the end he let Mr. and Mrs. Ito talk him into trying a new life, something about living a happy peaceful life being a better for vengeance.

Then this house just popped up for him, while he was trying to make some food money. So Totoro took it as a weird sign from the universe and decided to see how this would play out.
