Clark swallowed. Felt the sweet, familiar humiliation of not having to think of the answer. Of not having to decide. Of knowing, with the certainty of someone who had stopped lying to himself, that he would say yes.
“I’ll be there,” he said. His voice came out steady. Normal. As if he weren’t breaking inside into tiny, precious pieces.
Bruce nodded once. Long. Turned and walked to his ship. He didn’t say goodbye.
Clark kept staring at the empty space where he had been.
And smiled.
A small, crooked smile that didn’t reach his eyes. A smile that said he was satisfied with what he was given. That said this is what there is. That said and still, still, I’ll go.
