Summary
Elrond was endlessly fascinated by everything.
It was endearing, really, to watch him wandering about with wide eyes, asking questions of anyone who would tolerate him, always eager to listen and learn.
Still, sometimes it seemed he had to learn things for himself.

For a brief moment, after Elrond’s latest question, Gil-Galad considered pretending to be asleep. He didn’t know why the middle of the night was Elrond’s favorite time for deep discussions, and he certainly didn’t want to encourage it.

Summary
“I care,” she said, stepping closer, “that you walked in here with a rock and a theory about my grief, and still thought that meant you were the wisest person in the room. I care, that you love murderers, and when I say that hurts me, you tell me it’s not the right kind of truth.”
Elrond swallowed.
“I care,” Lodrilis said, now only inches from him, “that you are a man who thinks honesty is enough.”

Summary
Elrond tilted his head. Considered. “Erenion also says that I should not ask people things that they find distasteful, but Cirdan says you would not be afraid of me.”
Celeborn took a breath through his nose. “You are not frightening.” No, the only frightening thing about him was how much Galadriel would be enchanted by him.

Summary
Elrond had clearly come straight in from outside, most likely from his herb garden, as there were still mud stains on the knees of his pants and an errant leaf in his hair.
He had a heavy book tucked under his arm, and a freshly scrubbed root in his hands. He plopped the root down on the king’s desk with no preamble, then stood back, hands wrapped around his book.

Summary
Galadriel’s smile was thin, bright, all edges. “So we have: one half-feral Peredhel experimenting, one heir of Fëanor lying through his teeth, a king reading poetry with his fingers in his ears, and you —” she poked him lightly in the chest “— doing nothing.”
“I am supervising,” said Círdan serenely.
“Supervising what?”
He spread his hands. “The inevitable collapse of whatever ridiculous web they’ve spun.”

Summary
Celebrían stared after Elrond’s retreating back. “Is he always like this?”
She almost expected the king to ask for details, to say ‘like what’ or ‘in what way’? It would be reasonable, Celebrían supposed, to wonder what strange actions one’s herald had done.
But the king simply said, “Yes.”

Summary
The struggle was evident; a chair knocked over, blood on the wing of the chaise, a cushion forgotten on the floor, a broken vase.
Celebrían moved last, hovering just inside the door, eyes fixed on the narrow closet along the back wall.
Gil-Galad followed her gaze.
There was a chair shoved under the latch. Coming from behind it was a low pitched thudding.

“I have spent the last two thousand years trying to teach that man diplomacy.” His hand lifted, gesturing vaguely toward the east wing. “We’ve covered politics. Alliances. Public messaging. And at no point did I ever say: ‘Elrond, if you fall in love, immediately propose a three-way.’”

Summary
Gil-Galad wasn’t certain if it was his place to— well—
To warn Celebrían.
Not that there was danger, precisely. But there were… facts.
Specifically: that there was absolutely no way to be certain what was in Elrond’s pants at any given moment. And perhaps more importantly, that Elrond might not know either, and would react to questions on the topic with genuine confusion, as though someone had asked if his ears were still attached or if he continued to contain blood.

“Then perhaps you might permit me to explain?” Annatar offered, spreading his hands like a teacher before an obedient pupil.
Elrond tilted his head, the faintest flicker of curiosity. “If you insist,” he said. “I likely will not believe you, as my first instinct is usually correct, but you are welcome to attempt to disprove my hypothesis at your convenience.”

Summary
Elrond looked back down at the body. Slowly he reached out. There was something clasped tightly in its hand, locked in place by rigor mortis. Gently, careful not to break the fingers, he tugged it free.
“A pocketknife,” said Celeborn. “Against Sauron himself.” It wasn’t judging condemnation, but almost a grudging respect.
