Summary
Mike, slipping into his thoughts, is subconsciously listening to the girls’ orders and ringing them up, but in his head he is entirely somewhere else.
In his head, Michael Wheeler is there with his best friend in California, and maybe it is Will that’s working in an ice cream shop with him instead of Max and they are giggling while they eat ice cream in the back of the shop on their lunch break. In his head, Mike and Will are still friends and they have been since that one day of kindergarten— the day Mike has deemed forever the day his life began — and they are closer than they have ever been. In his head, Mike never fucked up and let Will leave, and in his head they are conjoined at the hip. But that is only in his head.
An AU where Mike and Will sign up for a surfing competition without the knowing of the other and they find out later that they are pit against each other. Not only are they each other’s opponents now, but now they are naturally each other’s worst enemies.
And even now when they are meant to hate each other, they can’t help but fall in love again. Even when the tide itself is telling them it is not meant to be.

Summary
Mike Wheeler has become an expert in suppressing his feelings. His coping mechanisms include dissociation, drinking, and doting over old photos of Will knowing he's lost his chance at happiness. But one late night drunken confession over the phone sends him spiraling until spring break, where he has to face his actions, his trauma, and all the fear he'd spent over a decade pushing aside.
Will, on the other hand, just went through a breakup and needs a rebound.

Lucas somehow convinces Mike to ask Will if he could crash in his place, Will agrees and is suddenly nervous about Mike meeting his boyfriend Carlton.
