In the aftermath of Starcourt, lives are fragmented. El is learning what it's like to be a normal human, Will is struggling to conceal an identity on the verge of unfortunate discovery (even from himself), Mike is floating in a world of change, Dustin is struggling to balance friendships and new opportunities, Lucas is blending into a town that never wanted him in the first place, and Max is unsuccessfully healing the hole in her heart as her family crumbles.
High school is the first beast other than a literal one that the entire Party will take on together. It is where their personalities will come to the surface, where their interests will no longer bond together but break them apart, and where their identities will morph into their new monsters. Can they learn to balance them, or will they let the weight of new experiences outweigh the old, worn memories of the past?

Summary
“Um,” Jackie starts and twists at the bottom of her shirt with her fingers. “My, uh, parents aren’t…” She swallows, throat bobbing. “I can’t go home,” she whispers. “And Shauna is mad at me and she needs space even- even if she won’t say it, I know and— and I don’t want her to feel obligated… I just— I can’t— I have nowhere to go.”
Nat blinks at her a few times before she sighs heavily. “Goddamnit, Taylor,” she mutters harshly before she looks at her, almost angrily. “Let’s go. I can’t leave you out here on your own and something happen to you. Shipman would kick my ass.”
Jackie smiles wobbly and reaches out, carefully, and curls her fingers into Nat’s sleeve. “Thank you,” she says softly, thankfully despite the small tear tracks on her face.
“Whatever,” Nat bites out, but doesn’t pull away from Jackie’s grip on her jacket.

And before Shauna can even open her mouth to argue, Jackie’s pushing herself up on arms so wobbly it looks like they might just snap, and Shauna has to resist the urge to shove her back down onto the mattress. Jackie scrubs a hand over her exhausted face.
“Just…what time is it? We have to start getting ready for homecoming soon, and I don’t want-“
“Wait, what?” Shauna blurts, her jaw legitimately dropping. Is she fucking serious?
“Jackie, are you kidding me? You’re not going to homecoming. You look terrible.”
