It’s a small enough thing, the Baratheon stag engraved into the lid. It had perhaps been locked once, but the salty sea air of Storm’s End softens most wood after enough years, and the latch tears clean out when he gives it a good pull. Old too, then. Inside is another bundle of parchment, neatly folded and tied with fraying twine.
More damned papers, he thinks for a disappointed moment, nearly shutting it again- what a waste this whole venture had been. But these do not look like more records. There is something personal in how they have been handled and hidden away, and Renly begins picking at the twine with curious fingers. When it falls away, he unfolds the first sheet, and finds a letter.
Milord Lyonel, it begins.

Summary
The orchard unfolded around Lyonel in shafts of sunlight and rippling green, the sweetness of fruit and warm grass lingering in the air even though blossoms had yielded to hard, young apples. Somewhere nearby, bees worked with sacred diligence as he stepped over a fallen branch and into a clearing, stopping abruptly.
Duncan stood at the heart of this clearing, bathed in golden light so vivid it seemed as if the orchard itself had conjured him. A vision haloed by gentle rays that lingered on his broad shoulders. The sunlight danced across his hair and illuminated his smile, turning the moment into a scene so tender and striking it felt like another world. Under the apple trees, surrounded by their sweet scent, Duncan appeared strong yet gentle, shining as if time had paused just to admire him.
Lyonel hesitated, unable to reconcile the Duncan he remembered with the gentle tableau before him. Sunlight and laughter blurred the boundaries of memory, making the familiar suddenly strange. And yet, as if the world snapped back into focus, recognition returned. Sharp, restoring everything Lyonel knew, but still leaving him dazzled by the transformation.Bookmarked by StarCityRebels
