“Will said something—” She started lying, under the big pressure of Mike's intense stare. She wonders that if she had a proper nose she would feel drowned by the bitter coffee scent flying around them. But it just bothers her now.
“Don't lie to me, El. You know I hate lies.”

Mike and El's relationship couldn't be worse, but the girl is too afraid of losing the few things she knows can bring her comfort, so she ends up making a plan. It's simple, really, she just needs to redirect the Alpha's attention from Will, an Omega, to her, a Beta. She'll realize bonds go way deeper than having inner wolves with desires, because Mike and Will's fate was already written in the stars, even before she came into their lives.

Summary
The Byers house has always been full of soft things - blankets folded in the same places, rooms rearranged until they feel right.
Will learns to do the same thing when he finally presents as an omega.
He builds places for himself in corners and on floors, then quietly takes them apart again before anyone can see.
Over time, he stops taking them apart. He just leaves them there, and lets Mike Wheeler in.

Mike hadn’t meant to hold Will’s hand. It was an accident. Honest.
A stupid one. A completely innocent, absolutely-not-premeditated accident. At least… mostly.
Because sure, Mike thought about it. A lot. More than a normal person should probably think about their best friend’s hands. He was fully aware it was weird. Mildly concerning. Possibly diagnosable.
But he couldn’t help it.

The compliments had started small.
“You did good,” Will had murmured, a few hours after the battle, as Mike tried very hard not to cry or pass out and Will clung to consciousness by a breath. And then, the next day, “Thanks for always being there for me. I couldn’t have done it without you.”
Totally normal. Totally Will. Mike could handle that.
But then it… spiralled.
“Your hair looks good today,” Will said one morning in the kitchen while trying (and failing) to pour cereal without spilling half the box.
Or, as they were walking to the Byers’ car: “I love your freckles. You know that, right?”
