Summary
It isn’t that Will had been ignoring the party (specifically Mike). It’s just that they never reached out once he had left like they said they would, so like anyone else would have done he was petty and decided that he wouldn’t call or write to them until they did, which led to it being almost 2 years since he had talked to them.
Will was almost done with his sophomore year of high school and had been through so much change in just the past year. Midway through his freshman year he had met some friends because of his honors English class.

Mike sighs, “This kid named Will, he seemed really nice but he’s sitting with the jocks,” Max raised an eyebrow,
“And?” She asks
Mike scoffs, “And jocks are assholes,”
Max gives him a look that, for his own sanity, he doesn’t decipher, “Why are you so worried about this?” she asks,
Mike pauses, he doesn’t actually know. He’s not usually one to make new friends, or even want to talk to people in general, sure the guy seemed really nice and happened to have really pretty eyes, and a pretty smile, and a nice voice, and- well, he might have an idea as to why he’s so caught up on this.
After his parents had a fight resulting in his dad being arrested, Will's mom took him and his two siblings to California to live with their grandparents. Eight years later they move back to Hawkins and he reunites with his favorite cousin and starts high school with his sister, El. He now must find balance between his new found popularity, courtesy of his cousin, and finding his own "people" without them thinking he's trying to bully them. How fun!!

Summary
Mike, slipping into his thoughts, is subconsciously listening to the girls’ orders and ringing them up, but in his head he is entirely somewhere else.
In his head, Michael Wheeler is there with his best friend in California, and maybe it is Will that’s working in an ice cream shop with him instead of Max and they are giggling while they eat ice cream in the back of the shop on their lunch break. In his head, Mike and Will are still friends and they have been since that one day of kindergarten— the day Mike has deemed forever the day his life began — and they are closer than they have ever been. In his head, Mike never fucked up and let Will leave, and in his head they are conjoined at the hip. But that is only in his head.
An AU where Mike and Will sign up for a surfing competition without the knowing of the other and they find out later that they are pit against each other. Not only are they each other’s opponents now, but now they are naturally each other’s worst enemies.
And even now when they are meant to hate each other, they can’t help but fall in love again. Even when the tide itself is telling them it is not meant to be.
