Summary
The land of Gemeinplatz is a land filled with fantastical creatures, adventurers looking to slay them, and heroes looking to distinguish themselves from the adventurers. To satisfy the needs of heroes who can’t find function like a normal human being (which most of them can’t), the lucrative Gemeinplatz slave trade crushes the dreams and ruins the lives of hundreds every day. These slaves endlessly labor, in the harems of so-called heroes, at the mansions of the landowning “heroes”, and as rare materials for various dubious magical spells.
In a world that looks down at them as demi-human, where the ruling class has no incentive to end this profitable trade, in which their oppressors are overpowered as all hell, what hope is there for the slaves?
What hope is there, is named John Brown. This time, he’ll finish what he started.

He was defensive, but he was teaching himself to put up walls instead of casting arrows. He had a streak of playful insolence. He liked pretty things. He was a little afraid of the dark, but tried not to be. He prided himself on his knowledge and intelligence. He was happiest in the books.
He was also—and this, Violet could put together, was why he ever woke her in the first place—deeply, insatiably lonely.

“That place is way haunted, Lis." Taffy says this as if she's imparting some arcane wisdom upon her, not the town's only urban legend. She even develops the same spooky cadence that everyone uses to tell it: “On a dark, stormy night... under the full moon... lightning will strike Bachelor's Grove! And all of those sad-sack singles will rise from the dead to take a living bride and drag her, kicking and screaming, back down into the earth. For eternity.”
Kicking and screaming — yeah, right. Being whisked off to spend eternity with a man who desires her enough to claw his way out of the grave isn't what Lisa would call a horror story. Quite the contrary.

Summary
Every square inch of Lisa’s body was blistered to hell and back, adorned by a network of puffy, angry-looking veins that, had her heart still been beating, would have more or less threatened to burst at any given moment. Red and raw, several sections on her arms, legs, and chest having peeled off to reveal glistening tissue.
Her mane of thick, curly auburn hair had been reduced to a few small, fried patches that clung to the charred flesh of her scalp with a strength similar to bubblegum and well-intentioned vibes. There was a possibility that she’d died with her eyes open, but the awful swelling of the skin around their sockets had sealed them shut.
None of that mattered, of course.
Lisa was still just as beautiful as when Callum had first met her. She always, always would be.
…Even so, those injuries had to be dealt with. Despite what Lisa had said before about accepting a person’s flaws, Callum’s instincts told him she wouldn’t appreciate being left to resemble a puppet made of half-raw-half-cooked steaks.
(AKA My idea of what happened with Lisa and Creature after the backyard tanning bed fire.)

Strange how much life and soul could be found brimming from a living corpse.
