Beyond almost anything else, Mike loved looking at Will.

If Mike wasn't afraid of disturbing Will, he'd reach forward and pluck the lobe between his thumb and index finger. Feel the skin, the thickness of the cartilage, imagine what it'd be like to make room for a stud or small hoop, or the tiny hole of a mistake made. He'd touch and hold just for the sake of touching and holding, for the simple reminder that he could - learn every texture of Will's body as deeply as he knew how it looked.

The words catch in his throat, mouth agape. Tears having sprung to his waterline, his voice cracks.
Mike shifts beside him.
“Me.”
It's said like a slur. It punches like one.
“Is that such a bad thing?” Mike’s voice comes out gentle like a caress of a hand through his hair, akin to a whisper with the sincerity of an oath. He falls closer into Will's orbit, careful eyes raking over the enclosed boy before him. With a shy smile, he says, “I kinda like Will the Wise.”

Summary
The truth of the painting is revealed and it plays out like a pickaxe through ice. Except, after Vecna is defeated, Mike still avoids making amends. Then, the Byers move out and Mike learns he can't fall asleep without Will…
“You think we should go?” Will asked.
A short look was spared by Mike, the gradual pull of gravity as he took Will in like cough syrup. Everything about him etched away at Mike: the soft line drawn between firm brows, his otherwise crease-less features and the pits of fear in hollow pupils, visible even in the low light.
They hadn't spoken in over an hour. They'd hardly spoken in days. Somehow, Mike had been able to keep Will at arms length - never left one on one, but never out of sight either. That was until Will headed for the Upside Down in secrecy and Mike had no choice but to follow after or watch as he disappeared in the distant horizon. There was only one real option.
“You tell me,” Mike muttered, sour-tasting as he forced his gaze back out of the window, “apparently, I don't know anything.”

Summary
Will and Mike finally get a break after an encounter with Vecna.
Warmth seeped into Will's skin as Mike's hands placed over his - holding for a second - then gently took the pillow and put it back beside the other. Mike stared so deeply - transparent and paper-thin; and Will feared they might fall into each other, sharing more than the oxygen passed between them, the clothes on their backs, the kisses through muffled words in face of the deteriorating world crumbling around them.
Some hours ago, Will stood hopeless and welcoming of whatever torture that Vecna had in store. He didn't care. He just wanted it all to finally stop. Then - despite the red cloudy sky and creatures roaming beneath it - Mike offered Will an olive branch of hope. Something to grasp onto, something as simple as a kiss, a scared mutter of, “I don't wanna do any of this without you.”

Ashes dropped to the ground with the gentle tap of the cigarette. It was over half-way down, red cherry sparking near Todd's long fingers. His lips pursed around the end, chest raising as he sucked in and lashes fluttered thoughtlessly. More smoke let into the room.
All the while, Tom watched. His smirk drooped ever so slightly and lost its bite as the tease erased from his eyes. He was hardly breathing. Yet, without a second to think, he took the cigarette from Todd's fingers. Nerves were rushing through him the entire time as he raised it to his mouth. And his lips replaced where Todd's had been mere moments ago. He inhaled for a few long seconds, eyes locked with Todd's.
