Summary
Merlin Emrys sat and stared at the new student info forms on his desk, while the children read quietly to themselves. After over fifteen hundred years, he couldn't allow the tiniest spark of hope to take shape until he knew for sure. The parents of the brother and sister joining his class were likely history buffs with a passion for Arthurian legends and nothing more. Nothing more than another heartbreak, just like the last twenty he'd followed up on in almost as many decades. He checked to see his students were still working, before taking a moment to close his eyes and remember. Faces, voices, and scents ran through his mind, and he longed for them to be more than distant memories. Damn his lonely heart. It was such a glutton for punishment.

This was a waste of a perfect spring day.
The first truly warm and pleasant day of the season had made itself known this morning, summoning Arthur from his slumber in a rare peaceful moment. That is, before his memory had caught up to him, snaking up his chest and catching in his throat in cold dread.
As he stood in the courtyard, waiting irritably for his betrothed to ride through the castle gates, he wished for a different day. A different fate; a chance for his own search for love.
But that day would not come.

A three part AU story. Act 1 starts when our young heroes are ten years old. Act 2 they're teens and Act 3 as young adults.
