Summary
Remus Lupin and Regulus Black show up at school at the start of Year 12 like they own the place (and technically, with all the money they stole from their parents, they kind of do). They're living together, best friends, maybe a little traumatised, and definitely in a band with a few other maniacs: Evan Rosier, Barty Crouch Jr., Pandora Rosier and Dorcas Meadowes. James Potter falls in love with Regulus as soon as he walks in the door, Sirius Black short-circuits the moment Remus opens his mouth, and suddenly everything is complicated. Songwriting is everyone’s therapy, and that’s great for the band ’cause everyone’s a pining mess. There’s parties, there’s pining, a healthy amount of emotional damage, and one very good indie rock band that will get their entire school screaming for them at a function.

In the end, it doesn’t matter. None of it fucking matters. Because what’s really in control is the tension. This elusive string tied between their chests that’s always changing length. Right now it’s so short and taught and strong that Will can’t imagine resisting it. So really, it was never a matter of if he would. Just when. When will he fold? When will he let go and let himself follow Mike into the water?
He dares to glance down at his knees, where he can see Mike’s fingers peeking out from behind his calves (as if he needed that visual reminder that they’re touching), and then back up to meet Mike’s expectant gaze.
He’s going to do it. He’s such a fucking idiot.
OR
Mike & Will have a long overdue conversation on the way back to Hawkins— by, in, and around a random motel pool.

Mike brightens, and he’s just a step or two away, now, and Will could reach out and touch him. “I’m glad,” he says, “I was – I was hoping you would.”
“Oh.” Will really wants to kiss him. “Well, I do.”
Mike beams. “Good.”
“Good,” Will echoes, feeling at a loss for what to say, but it doesn’t seem to matter when Mike’s grin only widens, and then his hands are on Will again, like they always seem to be, lately, and Will has no protests when they’re only a few inches away from each other.
Mike has been acting strange, and, if Will didn't know any better, he'd almost think Mike was flirting with him.
Thankfully, he knows better.

Will dropped his head into his hands. “Mike, oh my god—”
Paladin Mike’s jaw tightened. “I do not own him,” he said immediately. “He is—” He stopped, swallowing. His eyes went back to Will softening, and that softness made Mike hate him even more. He could recognize the look, and saw it mirrored in his own eyes countless times.

“He is the Light. By your oath, I am bound to him. My liege.” He bowed his head slightly toward Will, his mouth wrapped around the word like it was a prayer. “My cleric.” He said after, softer.
“Oh my god.” Will flushed, impossibly. “That is crazy. He is actually crazy."
Max, who had been standing with her arms crossed behind them, muttered, “Jesus Christ,” under her breath.
Mike Wheeler is going to explode, because there is an alternate, armoured version of him, following Will Byers around like he belonged to him.
